THRIVE at Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Academic institutions in Israel invite you to participate in international programs, earn credits or complete your degree. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to see the sites, to meet new people from all around the world, to hear Hebrew and Arabic, and to come to a closer understanding of Israeli society.

Hebrew University's THRIVE Program

A Comprehensive Israeli Experience

Many North American Jews wish to spend some time in Israel and get a better understanding of the everyday life and culture in the small but fascinating country. A person's college or university years might be just the time to do it, as you can continue perusing your studies while enjoying trips to the Negev or the Sea of Galilee, meeting Israeli and foreign students, try out new food and much more.

THRIVE Program

This unique track for visiting students incorporates academic studies at Jerusalem's Hebrew University while allowing participants to experience Israel as never before. THRIVE students get to go on field trips around Israel, spend a few days in the army and a few days of work in a kibbutz. They meet politicians, CEOs, artists and social activists, and have special activities on Jewish holidays. They visit the Western Wall and its tunnels with the Kotel's rabbi or have a kabalistic weekend in Safed.

In addition, during their stay in Israel, each student has an "adoptive" family; a place to have a home cooked dinner and a quiet conversation. Despite the load of amazing activities there are many off weekends for the students, so they can travel by themselves or just hang out in Jerusalem with their friends. Students may also volunteer at local organizations of their choice.

All students must take Hebrew lessons (Ulpan) and several mandatory classes in Jewish thought and history. In addition, they must complete 15 credits by electing courses in psychology, business, law, Middle Eastern studies, Israel studies, Jewish Philosophy and other subjects. The credits earned at the Hebrew University are recognized by many institutions worldwide including hundreds of colleges and universities in the US and Canada.

Studies Structure

The program is 5 months long and the academic courses and most activities are entirely in English. It opens twice a year, ever fall and spring. The fall program begins at the final week of August; the spring program begins at the final week of January.

The students arrive at Israel before the semester begins and take part in social activities as well as attend Hebrew lessons. They stay at the Hebrew University's dorms, in a walking distance from the campus, a short drive from the Old City of Jerusalem.

Admissions

The THRIVE program at Hebrew University is open to sophomores and juniors Jewish students with a GPA of 3.0 or above, who completed at least 36 credits. The suitable candidates will be interviewed by members of THRIVE.
