Global Health Program at Ben-Gurion University

Medicine Related to People

The work of MDs varies in different surroundings; the role of a surgeon in a top NYC hospital is different than that of a village doctor in a developing country. The living conditions of patients and their health problems depend massively on their location in the world. The doctors are expected to cope and adapt themselves to the circumstances around them.

Ben-Gurion University's Global Health track is a product of collaboration with Columbia University. In this program the wish is to give doctors the background and skills that are needed in anyplace they might work in.

Already in their first year, the students accompany a local doctor in Bedouin villages and get to meet the patients, their families and communities. That way, they get a better understanding of Bedouin way of life and recognize its influence on health and medical conditions.

About the Program

This medical program is generally intended for graduates of pre-med or science tracks. About 40 – 50 students are accepted each year. Most of them are from the US and Canada, and some 15% of the students are from other countries.

The program is basically similar to American tracks – meaning the first two years focus on science and the second half of the program is dedicated to medicine. During the program students take the regular medical classes and practicum as well as additional classes and workshops regarding global health.

Study Structure

This Master program is designed to be completed in four years. The highlight of the program is an 8 week clerkship in clinics around the world. Students may choose to work in Israel or the US or in developing countries such as Ethiopia, Uganda, Nepal, Peru or India.

Besides the chance to live and work in dozens of countries, it is also an opportunity for networking, as students get to work side by side with doctors from around the world. In addition, students may choose to complete their 4th year electives in Columbia University.
