Graduate Programs in Linguistics in Israel in English

 

 

Master's programs in Linguistics aim to give their students a better and more profound understanding of language acquisition, syntax, semantics and cognitive processes. The studies may have a lot to do with education, psychology, brain sciences, anthropology and also - computers.

 

In recent years, due to the growing demand of linguistic professionals in the hi-tech area, especially with regard to natural language processing, linguistics become increasingly popular. Psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics are other prevalent areas of research as well as great career options for graduates.

 

 

Students of MA programs in Linguistics will attend several courses and seminars in two or more areas of linguistics (syntax, language acquisition, semantics, phonology and morphology). Students may attend classes or conduct researches that involve other areas of study such as psychology, cognitive sciences, computer sciences etc. 

Faculties hold linguistic colloquiums, open scholarly meetings in which speakers from various universities present their current researches.

 

 

The duration of tracks with and without thesis is two years. In exceptional cases, students may work on their thesis an additional year.

 

 

The programs may include the following courses:

 

* The Frontal Lobe in Language Processing

* Methodological Principles in Linguistics

* Psychosemantics

* Spelling Acquisition

* Acquired Language and Reading Impairment

* Conditionals, Logic and Probability

 

 

These international Master's degree programs are open for students who completed their undergraduate degrees in linguistics. In some cases, students who majored in related areas such as cognitive sciences or psychology may also be accepted, but they will have to complete several undergraduate courses according to the faculty's requirements.

Students must have a GPA of 80 or 3.0 to be accepted to the non-thesis track. In order to apply for a track with a thesis, students must have a GPA of 85 (3.4). Since the studies are in English, students from non-English-speaking countries must pass an English proficiency test.

 

 

International Students pay approx. NIS 18,000 ($5,000) per year. The sum does not include additional expenses such as housing, transportation etc.

 

 

Bar Ilan University (Ramat Gan) - offers programs with and without thesis. Bar Ilan also offers the M.A. program "Linguistics in Clinical Research" in which honors students can complete their M.A. while basing their thesis on personal interdisciplinary research. The curriculum includes issues in psychology, communication disorders, brain sciences and similar fields.

 

Ben Gurion University of the Negev (Be'er-Sheva) – also offers tracks with and without thesis. Students are encouraged to conduct original researches and are given the chance to continue to a PhD track. The popularity of this university is partially due to its high academic standards. Another reason is its vibrant student life and unique location in the Negev.
