Medical Studies in Israel in English

Studying Medicine in Israel

In Israel you can study and get some practical experience at the leading medical and health programs. These programs incorporate high academic standards with a chance to live and work in a new and unusual environment. Israeli universities offer tracks for foreign students that are studied in English: MD degrees or International Master of Public Health.
 
Study Program
 
Israeli medical programs are designed to suit American standards and most participants are students from the US and Canada. All courses are in English; however, due to the requirements of the practical aspects of MD training, students must acquire some knowledge in Hebrew. The universities offer classes in Hebrew for that end.
 
M.D. studies
 
These programs are suitable for students who completed their pre-med undergraduate degree. At most universities, the track is open for students from the US and Canada only. In contrast, Ben-Gurion's track is open for students from other countries as well.
 
IMPH - International Master of Public Health
 
The program aims to train public health professionals. Trainees of this track will learn the skills needed to help communities on local or national levels to improve their prevention and treatment of all sorts of diseases and epidemics as well as find ways to spread knowledge among these communities. Students attending this program are from all around the world, from developing countries as well as Western Europe and North America.
 
All programs take pride in the social aspects of their tracks. Since students are mostly foreign, the programs include special trips, parties, sport activities etc. in which students get to know some major sites in Israel and a taste of Israeli life and culture, as well as get better acquainted with their peers.
 
Duration
 
The duration of all M.D. programs is four years. IMPH program takes place over the course of one year.
 
Curriculum
 
At M.D. programs, the first two years focus mainly on theoretical studies while the second part of the program focuses on practical experience. Besides science and medical related courses, students will also have to attend classes and workshops that regard their human relations (bedside manner).
 
The IMPH programs include courses regarding various aspects of public health such as public education, dealing with stigmas concerning health issues, epidemic control and treatment and containing drug or tobacco use.
 
Admission
 
The M.D. programs are available for students who finished (or about to complete) their undergraduate pre-med studies. The GPA should be around 3.4. Students must submit their MCAT scores (or their equivalent in case students are not from the US) with scores of above 27. Note - admission requirements change on yearly basis in accordance to the demand each year.The requirements also include submitting an essay and undergoing an interview. However, you can complete the admission process in the US.
 
Getting into IMPH programs, Candidates must complete their undergraduate degree before applying. The candidates' education has to regard health or science: doctors, nurses or dentists as well as health professionals that have undergraduate degrees in biological or social sciences. The program's admission committee takes into account academic achievements as well as practical experience.
 
In case candidates are not native English speakers they must take an English proficiency test such as TOEFL.
 
Tuition Fees and Scholarships
 
The tuition fees are approx. $27,000 - $34,000 per year (100,000 NIS).
All academic institutions offer scholarships based on academic achievements.
 
Academic Institutions
 
Ben Gurion University (Be'er-Sheva) – offers M.D. in International Health program in collaboration with New York's Columbia University. Unlike other programs that mainly accept US and Canadian candidates, Ben Gurion's program is more diverse and includes students from other countries. This university has a reputation for its vibrant student life.
 
Tel Aviv University – TAU's M.D. program is open to US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents only. The program is officially recognized by the State of New York. Students can live and study at Tel Aviv and enjoy the beach, bars, countless shops etc. TAU is the only university to offer the Voyage to Medicine program. The semestrial track is for pre-med students and combines theoretical studies, practical experience and volunteer work.
 
Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (Haifa) - The Technion offers a program for American and Canadian students. It is one of the leading schools in Israel and is home to several Nobel Laureates.
 
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem – It is the only university that offers an IMPH program in English. Students may complete their thesis as part of their studies. The program is unique as it includes many health professionals from around the world and aims to enable them to embark on health campaigns in their own countries and communities.
